The Royal
Glass-Works at Sèvres was created by the Marquise de Pompadour,
a lover of the Arts and a favorite of Louis XV. She wanted the
Royal Court to have glasses as perfect as those formely made by
the Venetians. To this end, she acquired a glass-works in Paris
which, the following year, she moved to the grounds of her chateau
at Sèvres, to make it into a luxury glass-works principally
making glass for the Court of King Louis XV.
Changes to
the French industrial landscape led Cristal de Sèvres to
relocate to Vannes le Chatel in the Lorraine region in 1971. Thanks
to the talent and skills of its glass-makers, the Lorraine region,
since the Middle Ages, has played a major role in the manufacture
of glass and later crystal. The production plant at Vannes le
Chatel, benefiting from two centuries of experience, provides
Cristal de Sèvres with the production capacity for all
its crystal collections.
All
these works are the fruit of the most elaborate methods of their
master glass-makers. They blend the tradition and perfection of
hand-made, mouth blown crystal with bold contempory designs.
